FDI in multi-brand retail

The parliament (both the lower and the upper house) has cleared the much debated and controversial FDI in multi-brand retail.

The single brand retail segment was opened for up to 51% FDI in 2006 and the limit increased to 100% in July this year. In spite of opening the single brand retail completely to FDI,
no major foreign companies showed tremendous interest in a limping economy like India.

What remains to be seen is that whether allowing FDI in multi-brand retail will really help boost business and overall economy in India. Or will the foreign firms find it difficult to set up a business given such a vast & dynamic demography of our country. 

Idli and dosa mix can sell like hot cakes in one part of the country but the other part might only like raw chicken on the shelves.Whereas one part of the country may like to wear light woolens in winters the other might demand heavy quilts and woolens. Not only the eating habits & weather; we Indians are different in many ways – right from temperate south Indians to glitzy & flamboyant north Indians. We are one country with definitive & complex diversity. 

Every mega retailer will have to consider all these facts prior to starting business in India.

  1. What a shame on Congress,they will by numbers that too by manipulation of SP and BSP.This is the dark history of congress.Now the downfall of congress has been started.
